Subscription - FAQs

What shows will I have access to?

You may listen to every available radio program Joe has produced -- over 200 shows. Click on the Series titles below to see the specific shows available:

WBAI and NPR Playhouse - 1978 - 1984
Work in Progress - 1986 - 1992
In the Dark - 1993 - 1995
Somewhere Out There - 1996 - 1997
The Other Side - 1999 - 2001

In addition, Premium Members can listen to brand NEW programs Joe is currently producing. Each month, Joe will deliver a new show which will be about a half-hour to an hour long. The first installment, "Time's Arrow" (one hour), is now online! Plus, throughout each month, we will upload Joe Frank shows, performances and other surprises, many of which have not been aired or available in the past.

Why are you charging to listen to Joe's shows?

The simple answer is because of the high cost of bandwidth. In the past, Joe's radio programs were sponsored (by KCRW) and therefore streamed at no cost to us. Now, however, we must pay for programming, server space and bandwidth. Our objective is to eventually provide all of Joe's shows streamed free of charge. To accomplish this, we must first cover our costs as we investigate other options for sponsorship. We're glad to report that, because of the favorable response to the subscription plan so far, we are now able to add more content for all Members - Free and Premium. We've added two full-length shows for Free Members, and, as we continue to cover costs, we will add more full-length archived shows.

Can I listen to any free shows?

Yes. We have a couple of full-length shows online now for Free Members along with selections, samples, and a few extras. As we are able to cover costs, we will continue to bring you more shows free of charge.

How do I listen to a show?

When you visit your Member page for the first time, you will see a list of the five Joe Frank Series spanning 23 years of broadcasting. Clicking on any one of these Series titles opens a menu of all of the shows from that Series.

When you select a program to listen to, that program will appear on or be added to shows already chosen on your "request" list on the same page and will remain available there for 24 hours.

You may listen to this show as many times as you wish during the 24-hour period after you have selected it. Once that period is over, the show will automatically be removed, and you may select a different show to add to your "request" list. (Or, you may add the same show again.)

Each time you log into your Member page, you will see the list of shows you've requested along with the time left before each show completes its 24-hour cycle in your "request" list.

Is there a limit to the number of programs I may listen to?

As a paid subscriber, you have access to all of the Joe Frank radio programs.

At this time, however, there is a maximum of 5 shows you may have in your "request" list during any given period.

We will monitor bandwidth costs over the next couple of months, and, if we are able to, we will increase the maximum number of shows available to you at any given time. Hopefully, we'll be able to completely eliminate the maximum number of shows in your queue.

How many times may I listen to a specific program I've selected in the 24-hour period?

As many times as you'd like.

If I have reached my maximum number of 5 show requests, how will I know when I can select another program for listening?

After you've selected a show, you will see a timer next to the title. This timer begins to count down to the end of the 24-hour period, showing hours and minutes remaining. This countdown starts from the time you make your selection.

A show will automatically be removed from your list when the 24-hour period has expired. At this time, you may select it again or choose a different show, as you wish.

Suppose I select a show and then change my mind. Can I delete that selection?

Not at this time.

What is my subscription cycle?

Your subscription cycle begins the date that you sign up for the subscription and is determined by the type of subscription you order. For example, if you sign up for a monthly subscription on August 10th, your billing cycle will be from August 10th through September 10th. If you sign up for a quarterly subscription, your subscription cycle would be in effect for 3 months from the day you sign up and your subscription will be renewed automatically at the end of that period. Your main member page will show the date you signed up and the plan - monthly, quarterly or annually - so you may easily see the dates of your subscription cycle.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes, you may cancel at any time. However, we cannot issue refunds for the remainder of your subscription cycle. You will continue to have access to the shows until that cycle expires.

Can I renew later?

Yes, you can renew whenever you wish.

Can I upgrade my subscription from monthly to quarterly or to yearly?

Yes. Cancel your existing subscription before the end of your recurring subscription cycle. At that time, you may order the quarterly or yearly subscription on your Member page. However, wait until close to the expiration of your current subscription cycle. We cannot issue a refund for the time left in your subscription cycle once you've cancelled it.

Who should I contact if I experience technical problems?

Send an email to webmaster@joefrank.com and we'll respond as quickly as possible.

Be sure to read the Terms and Conditions for using the Joe Frank streaming media. Enjoy listening!

Known Issues

If you do not see a slider and/or a pause button on the player, you may not have the latest Windows Media Player. Be sure to download the latest version for your particular system. Having said that, we recently discovered that there are certain streams that, despite the updated player installation, still show a greyed out pause / play button and slider. [ September 21st ] We're narrowing in on this nuisance and should have it straightened out soon.

Here are links to the Windows Media Player:

We've learned that some email anti-spam programs and email anti-virus programs may interfere with your Windows Media Player. Try lowering the security settings, or turn off these applications while listening. [ This does not apply to general anti-virus programs ]

Please email us with any problems you're having with streams. As much specific information you can provide is helpful. For example, let us know your platform (Mac or PC), operating system, browser, the stream(s) you're experiencing problems with, and the exact error. Thanks to many of you who have helped us identify problems!

[ October 1 ]
There have been a number of setbacks caused by malfunctioning or out-of-date software and so Joe's new shows are delayed. The good news: He's finishing up the show this weekend. We should have the new material online for Premium Members by end of day Sunday. Thanks to everyone who's helping make the subscription service a success - new shows wouldn't be possible without you. Along with Joe's new show, Premium Members will also be able to watch one of the sexy film shorts written by and starring Joe Frank. Plus, we'll be be adding one or two surprises to every monthly addition. (We'll send out a Newsletter as soon as they're online.)

Please let us know if you're having any problems with the Membership - Free or Premium - by emailing the webmaster here. We'll help to resolve issues as quickly as possible.

We are making improvements - many thanks for your feedback!

Important Note about the new Streams:

We spent quite a bit of time researching what would be the most efficient and cost effective way of offering all of the Joe Frank programs for listening online. We wanted to insure that we could offer as many free shows as possible, while still being able to cover our costs. It was important for us to accomplish this goal in a way that allowed us to offer even more free streaming media now and in the future.

The solution we found is to offer the streams playable on Windows Media 9 players only. This high quality player is available for both Mac and PC on several operating systems. Be sure to download the right player for your system!
