Carolyn Miller – :
This is a sad, true-to-life tale of a boy’s descent into manhood. He pines after the pink lady only to mature into a life of disillusionment when he’s taken advantage of by a wealthy jet-setter in Puerto Rico. He’s a drifter who doesn’t seem to have the energy to move beyond forces conspiring to destroy. And maybe there are no forces conspiring against him, really, just his own inertia in which he’s trapped and doomed to ennui. I found this story to be somewhat engaging but the sum total to be unsatisfying. It’s honest and realistic, but I found myself wondering in the end if this was really a tale worth telling.
Graham Severance – :
The Queen of Puerto Rico is my favorite short story. Set in first person, the unconventional man recounts his experiences but does not take back any of his choices which make him the man he develops into.
